REPORT ON THE KERALA PIRAVI DAY CELEBRATIONS

The 70th Kerala Piravi Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm and grandeur at the school auditorium of Indian School Salalah on 1 November 2026. The programme was organised by the Malayalam Department with the aim of commemorating the 70th anniversary of the formation of the State of Kerala in 1956 and celebrating the state’s rich cultural heritage.

The Chief Guest, the Principal of Indian School Salalah, Ms. Saher M. A. Sayed, was accorded a warm and colourful welcome through a grand traditional procession. The procession featured girls carrying ornamental umbrellas (Muthukkuda), children bearing Thalappoli, and the vibrant rhythms of the traditional Chenda Melam.

The celebrations commenced with an invocation to God. The Principal, Ms. Saher M. A. Sayed, formally inaugurated the programme by lighting the ceremonial lamp. In her inaugural address, she highlighted the historical significance of Kerala Piravi and reflected on the memorable events surrounding the formation of the State.

A brief presentation on the formation of Keralam, accompanied by a visual display of photographs documenting the Kerala Piravi celebrations organised by the Malayalam Department from 2009 to 2026, was one of the notable highlights of the event.

The cultural segment commenced with a special Kerala Piravi song written, composed, and taught by Mr. Saji Chandrodayam, HOD In-charge of the Malayalam Department. This was followed by a vibrant fusion dance, a graceful Oppana showcasing the cultural traditions of Malabar, and a traditional folk song depicting Keralam’s rich agricultural heritage. Each performance was warmly received by the audience.

The programme continued with a dance medley featuring evergreen songs from classic Malayalam films, an energetic semi-classical dance performance and a lively Duff Muttu presentation. These performances added colour and variety to the celebrations and provided the audience with an engaging cultural experience.

The Malayalam Department remains committed to identifying, encouraging and nurturing the artistic talents of students. The celebrations reflected this commitment by providing students with a platform to showcase their abilities. The Vice-Principals, Mr. Mammikutty T.V. and Ms. Ambika Padmanabhan, delivered their felicitation addresses, expressing their appreciation for Keralam’s cultural heritage and highlighting its enduring values of humanity and compassion.
