PONGAL’-HARVEST FESTIVAL CELEBRATION AT INDIAN SCHOOL SALALAH BY TAMIL DEPARTMENT
Indian School Salalah celebrated the Pongal festival on January 29, 2026 in the school auditorium. Through the dedicated efforts of the Tamil Department, the event successfully showcased the profound artistic and literary heritage of Tamil Nadu. This grand tribute to Southern India’s harvest season was honored by the Principal, Mr. Deepak Patankar, alongside Vice Principal Mr. Mammikutty, and Assistant Vice Principals Dr. Vipindas and Mrs. Anita Rose, various Department Heads and Teachers, who joined the students in welcoming the season of prosperity.
The function commenced with a soulful prayer song by Miss Sudhishna Shri and Miss Nilazhini, followed by the traditional Tamil Thai Vazhthu performed by students of Classes VI and VII. Mrs. Anandhi Kandasamy (Tamil& Socical Science faculty) formally welcomed the gathering, setting a warm tone for the cultural showcase. Miss Merin Shibu captivated the audience with a vibrant Bharatanatyam performance. The energy continued with a folk solo by Ihan, and group folk songs and dances performed by students across Classes V to VIII. In a tribute to farmers, Master Nandhesh recited a Thirukkural, providing its meaning in both Tamil and English. Master Kavin Revanth further highlighted the historical and cultural significance of Pongal. A segment of the programme featured riddles conducted by Master Monish and Master Siddharth, which resulted in active participation from the students. The venue was adorned with beautiful Kolams and traditional festive decorations, mirroring the authentic spirit of a Tamil harvest.
The Vice Principal Mr. Mammikutty in his speech mentioned the richness of Tamil culture and quoted Tamil as one of the oldest languages in India. He appreciated the efforts taken by the staff and students of the Tamil Department. The Assistant Vice Principal Dr. Vipindas in his address acknowledged the efforts taken by the teachers and students in putting up a great show within a short period of time. He also mentioned the variety of vibrant programmes that showcased the richness of Tamil culture. The Assistant Vice Principal Mrs. Anita Rose delivered a stirring message, emphasising the strong values of Tamil culture and encouraging students to uphold these traditions now and in the future. She expressed her gratitude to the members of the SMC, the Principal Mr. Deepak Patankar and all those who took the initiative for introducing Tamil as a scholastic subject in ISS.
The program not only showcased the students’ diverse talents but also strengthened the cultural bond within the institution. The compering team concluded the programme in a wonderful way with rich heritage and joy of togetherness by saying ‘Pongalo Pongal’! The programme finally came to a closure with vote of thanks by Mrs. Chandra M, (Tamil faculty) which served as the final tribute to a celebration defined by cultural pride and talent.
