Continuous Professional Development progammes not only help educators to keep pace with the current standards but also ensures that teachers can deliver high quality teaching and impact positively on pupil outcomes. The management of Indain School Salalah headed by President Dr.Abubacker Siddique, Chairman-Academic sub committee Dr.Muhammed Yousoof Ismail and Principal Mr.Deepak Patankar had been constantly arranging seminars, workshops and CPDs for the teaching faculty. A two-day CPD session was organized by ISS for the teaching fraternity on  21st July 2024, highlighting the importance of mental health and adolescence issues and 22nd July  2024 on ‘Creating happy classroom’.

DAY-1: The Principal, Mr. Deepak Patankar, V.P, Mr. Mammikutty, AVPs, Mr. Vipindas and Mrs. Anita Rose, HODs and teachers attended the session. After the inauguration with the lighting of the lamp done by the resource person Mrs.Saloni Priya, Principal Mr. Deepak Patankar, Assistant Vice Principal Mrs.Anita Rose, Primary Subject incharges- Mrs.Shubha, Mrs.Rachel and Mrs.Meena Venkat, Principal Mr. Deepak Patankar introduced the resource person, Mrs. Salony Priya who is a renowned counseling psychologist working in the area of Education Management and Human development and training for nearly 18 years.    

The session provided a powerful and engaging learning experience through various activities. Mrs. Salony Priya elaborated that teachers are the ambassadors of change and their work has become more challenging as they are dealing with smarter generation of this modern era of technology. The resource person elaborated a deeper perspective ensuring good mental health for children and adolescents. She conducted an interesting activity based on different age groups of the children to have a positive approach towards teenagers. Understanding of the traits and behaviours of adolescent during their transition period in life from childhood to adulthood is imperative and thus were focused upon. 

The workshop also guided teachers to use triggers or activities such as Vision board, how to reframe negative self-talk, new theory of well-being (PERMA Model) to improve self management and to develop positive psychology among students. The need for developing independent and critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students was laid emphasis on as when students have strong self-awareness skills, they can identify their strengths and challenges. Teachers were made to understand the emotional and psychological needs of teenagers and how to deal with common problems of adolescence.

The resource person highlighted the significance of core life skills and social skills among students. She motivated the teachers to deal and not to deny the emerging issues of children. The use of different strategies such as ‘Case- based/ Case study’ and ‘Expressions India’ to enhance student mental health and provide immediate and relevant teacher feedback were elucidated.  Thus, the workshop was not only engaging but highly invigorating for the teachers. The session on day one was concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Vice Principal-Mr. Mammikutty.

The CPD session for the second day commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamp. Principal Indian School Salalah Mr. Deepak Patankar, Headmistress  Indian School-Thumrait Ms. Rekha Prasant,  Vice Principal Mr. Mammikutty, Assistant Vice Principals Mr. Vipindas and Ms. Anita Rose, Kindergarten Incharge Ms. Anjali and Ms. Uma Maheshwari (KG faculty) lit the lamp, invoking blessings of God. Ms. Rachel (English-Primary Subject Incharge) formally welcomed the gathering. Assistant Vice Principal Mr. Vipindas introduced the resource person Ms. Saloni Priya.

The CPD sessions titled "Proactive approach to teach young minds!” and “Creating happy classroom” focused on fostering emotional well-being, enhancing teacher-student relationships, and promoting a joyful learning experience and creating a positive learning atmosphere. The session aimed to empower teachers to create happier and more productive learning environments.

 It highlighted on happiness, myths of happiness,  integrating play for cognitive development, breaking the myths of play, the Science of happiness, Nature of happiness, Correlates of happiness, Empowered Educator- Instructions with love and logic!, social and emotional wellness and A to Z of an effective educator. Overall, the CPD sessions served as a catalyst for fostering a positive school culture.

Participants expressed overwhelmingly positive feedback about the interactive and practical nature of the session. They appreciated the variety of strategies, techniques, ideas and activities presented to create happier classrooms. Feedbacks highlighted a strong intention among teachers to implement the new techniques learned.

During the concluding segment of the session, Principal Indian School Salalah Mr. Deepak Patankar, Headmistress  Indian School-Thumrait Ms. Rekha Prasant,  Vice Principal Mr. Mammikutty, Assistant Vice Principals Mr. Vipindas and Ms. Anita Rose, Kindergarten Incharge Ms. Anjali presented a memento to the resource person -Ms. Saloni Priya as a token of appreciation and recognition,  for her invaluable contribution  to professional development in education and her efforts in enriching the learning experience and fostering growth among educators.

AVP Ms. Anita Rose proposed the Vote of Thanks. It encapsulated the spirit of appreciation and recognition for all individuals and entities involved in making the CPD sessions, a successful and impactful event.
