The Annual Athletic Meet of Indian School Salalah was held on Friday, 3rd November,2023. The event was graced by the presence of Mr. Ali Mohammed Mahad Baaqi, Director of Sports and Youth Activities, Salalah, who was the chief guest for the occasion.
Dr. Abubacker Siddique, the president of the school management committee, along with other members of the committee and the school principal Mr. Deepak Patankar received the Chief Guest, Mr. Ali Mohammed Mahad Baaqi.The event began with a general welcome and assembly of athletes, followed by a guard of honour to the Chief Guest by scouts and guides and the office bearers. The school Head Boy Master Mohnish Kumar Hemnani and the Head Girl Miss Sanchita Anil Agte welcomed the Chief Guest and escorted them to their seats. He was presented with a bouquet and the meet badge was pinned.
The school choir presented a welcome song, and Mr. Arun Raj, Member of the School Management Committee, delivered the welcome address. Mr. Arun Raj, Member, SMC, in his welcome speech extended his hearty welcome to the chief guest Mr. Ali Mohammed Mahad Baaqi, all the dignitaries and invitees, parents, staff and the students. While addressing the athletes he said that sports and games induce self-confidence and discipline among the students.
The school flag was hoisted, and the event was declared open by the chief guest, Mr. Ali Mohammed Mahad Baaqi, followed by the Torch bearing ceremony, taken around the field by the previous year’s Sports Champion, Miss Nicole Sarah Ernest. The sports secretary then took the oath pledging to uphold the honour and the spirit of true sportsmanship, followed by an address by, Dr. Abubacker Siddique, the President of the School Management Committee. He explained the role of sports in the life of a student in doing better in academics and thanked the parents for their unwavering support for the growth of the school.
Prior to the address of the chief guest Mr. Ali Mohammed Mahad Baaqi, Member of the SMC Dr. Shariq Mohammed, gave an introduction of the chief guest. Dr. Shariq briefed the profile of Mr.Ali Mohammed Mahad Baaqi, the chief guest, and highlighted his remarkable achievements in the field of journalism and as the director of Sports and Youth Activities, Salalah. Mr.Ali Mohammed Mahad Baaqi in his short speech expressed his gratitude to be the chief guest of the function and reassured his support for the school in the field of cultural activities, sports and games, and added that the school can avail the facilities at the Sultan Qaboos Youth complex to conduct various activities.
As a token of love and gratitude, Mr.Ali Mohammed Mahad Baaqi was presented with a memento by the president of the School Management Committee Dr. Abubacker Siddique, Principal Mr. Deepak Patankar and other members of the SMC.
On this occasion, the Principal, Mr. Deepak Patankar addressed the gathering. He noted that sports and games have helped the students to come out of the pandemic shell and move on with a normal and competitive spirit. He informed the parents that the school is going to introduce Sports Management as the 6th subject from class 9th. He emphasized on his desire to see Indian School not only a hub of learning, but also a place to excel in sports.
As a customary practice, Mr. L. Mohandas, the Head of the Physical Education Department presented the Annual Report which highlighted the activities and achievements of the Sports Department. He briefed about the month-long selection and conduct of the annual athletic meet and threw light on the school’s commendable performance in the recently concluded CBSE Oman Clusters athletic meet in Muscat. He also informed that as part of improving sports facilities, a synthetic badminton court is built, new table tennis boards and high jump mattresses are bought, and soon, KDF synthetic flooring will be done in the KG block.
With the national anthems of Oman and India, the formal part of the event came to an end. Soon after a mesmerizing display of synchronized and colourful display of mass drill was put up by the students of class 2 and 7, the track events commenced.
The track and field events included a number of races such as 80 metres, 200mtr, 4x100 metres relays for different categories. The atmosphere was charged with zeal and fervour with the call for the finals of 80 metres. With its competitive spirit unleashed, the team to reckon with as it went to win the race is the Champion House-Coral with 149 points in Group A&B while the Sapphire House secured the runner up position. The Amber House grabbed the trophy in group C&D with 108 points and the Sapphire House bagged the runner up position. In the Primary Section, the Sapphire House notched the Championship with 33 points while the Emerald House had to be contented with the runner up position.
The Chief Guest, Mr. Ali Mohammed Mahad Baaqi gave away the prizes and trophies to the group A individual champions and the winner and runner up Houses. The trophies and medals for various athletic events and cluster events were given away by the President of SMC, members of SMC, dignitaries, Principal and the admin team.
Miss Nicole Sarah Ernest who won the maximum number of points in Group A was declared and awarded the sports champion trophy of this years' athletic meet.
The Meet concluded with lowering of the School Flag followed by a vote of thanks by Mr. Parvinder Singh of the physical education department. The atmosphere echoed with the cheering of the students for their Houses and school. It was a day filled with sportsmanship, enthusiasm and memories to cherish.
