To create a supportive and empathetic school environment that promotes mental well- being of the students, Indian School Salalah observed the World Mental Health Day on 10th October 2023. The global theme for this year is ‘Mental Health is a Universal Human Right’ and it aims to improve knowledge, raise awareness and drive actions that promote and protect everyone’s mental health as a universal human right.
The celebration commenced with Mrs. Meghasree Nair, the Student Counsellor, Indian School Salalah addressing the students about the value of a healthy mind. She, in her speech, stressed that sometimes it is alright to feel low and assured the students that their struggles are being heard. She also highlighted that mental health is crucial in preparing them to face the challenges and help them grow to their highest potential.
Psychology students of classes XI and XII made posters based on the theme and the same were displayed in the quadrangle which made the students realize that mental health is not a destination, but it is a journey. To motivate the students to believe in themselves and to increase their self-confidence, the students along with their teachers repeated three positive affirmations in their classes which filled the rooms with positivity. A soothing music was played through the PA system during the 8th period. This music therapy helped both the students and teachers to focus on their senses and feel relaxed.
The Kindergarten organized a unique event that featured activities such as music therapy and the use of positive affirmations within the classroom on the occasion of World Mental Health Day. The children found joy in expressing their emotions by drawing emojis.
Students of 1&2 were encouraged to write a gratitude note for their parents, teachers and other family members. A sheet was distributed among the students to express their feelings on different situations in life, apart from that a smiley emoji was stuck on all the students’ ID card by the class teachers to show how each emotion is important for mental health. By involving in all these activities students understood the value of Mental health.

The daylong celebration came to an end with the gratitude notes written by the students in the sticky notes provided to them. The sticky notes were stuck on to the white board of their respective classes. This activity made the students introspect themselves and realize that they are never left alone and there is always someone to guide and support them.
