International Literacy Day is celebrated on September 8th every year globally, dedicated to promote literacy worldwide. This year INDIAN SCHOOL SALALAH took the initiative to celebrate it a day early, on September 7, 2023 with great enthusiasm and fervour. The event was organized by Reading Club of Indian School Salalah to emphasize the importance of literacy and to encourage our students to become lifelong learners. Principal Mr. Deepak Patankar, Vice Principal Mr. Mammikutty, Assistant Vice Principals Mr. Vipin Das and Mrs. Anita Rose graced the occasion along with teachers and students of class V.

The celebration commenced with an impressive display of posters created by the talented students of class 8, scrap book and dictionary created by Reading Club members from class 5 to 8. These posters, scrap book and dictionaries beautifully illustrated the significance of literacy in our lives and their artistic skills left a lasting impact on all who witnessed them. The school quadrangle was adorned with these thought-provoking artwork providing a visual feast for everyone.

A special session was organized for young learners from Class 5. The session aimed at instilling the love for reading and learning among these budding scholars. An informative video of UNESCO related to International Literacy Day was screened in the school auditorium. The video highlighted the global significance of literacy and showcased stories of individuals who have overcome challenges through education.

In line with the theme of the day, the ‘Book Talk’ activity done by reading club members of class 5 was pleasant surprise for students. Book talk of Miss Izma Fathima (5B), Miss Gayathry (5A), Miss Gopika Gopakumar (5E), Miss Mentalla Tariq (5G), Miss Sudhishna (5G) was presented. It was indeed exciting for all gathered. Miss. Priyal Pitroda (class5), Master Karthik Sudeesh (class6), Master Adit Madhav (Class7) and Miss Srini S. Dandu (class8) took turns reading extracts from their favourite books. This activity showcased the diversity of reading interests among our student body and encouraged others to explore new genres and authors. It was heartening to witness the passion for reading among our students.

Speaking on the occasion, Esteemed Principal, Mr. Deepak Patankar, delivered an inspiring address emphasizing the pivotal role of literacy in personal growth, career development and social progress. He urged all students to make reading a daily habit and shared anecdotes from his own life, highlighting how books have shaped his journey. Vice Principal, Mr. Mammikutty also addressed the gathering encouraged students to take advantage of the resources available and to actively participate in reading programmes. Assistant Vice Principal Mr. Vipin Das in his address advised to promote the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society. He appreciated activities done by Reading Club and motivated students to inculcate the habit of reading daily.  Head of English Department Mr. C.T. Ramasamy highlighted the importance of reading and good conversational skills that will give the learners an extra edge overall.  

The celebration of International Literacy Day at our school on September 7, 2023, was a resounding success. It not only underscored the importance of literacy but also inspired the students to embrace the world of books and knowledge. The event was meticulously planned and executed by Reading Club in-charges Mrs. Sreevidya.S and Ms. Urvi G. Ahya.
