                        Mathematics  Day Celebrated at Indian School Salalah (22/12/2019)

Indian School Salalah celebrated Mathematics Day on December 22nd 2019, to commemorate the 132nd birth anniversary of the great Mathematical genius, Shri Srinivasa Ramanujan who made exemplary contribution to Mathematics. Mathematics day was celebrated with an objective of creating awareness about importance of mathematics in everyday life activities, stimulate interest and bring out creativity in applying concepts.

Mast. Kashif formally extended his cordial welcome to the gathering. The program commenced with a tongue twister on puzzles by Miss. Aimen  which spread joy of solving puzzles and games. This was followed by a mind-boggling Puzzle solving competition, Miss. Maryam of class 9 was the winner. The idea underlying this competition was to encourage logical and analytical thinking in students besides their regular academic study of the subject.  

This was followed by the Rubik’s Cube competition which was  won by Mast. Giridhar Sasikumar  and Mast. Mohummed Anfas in the 3rd and 4th classes category, Mast. Melvin Monson John and Miss. Darshana Sandeep in the 5th and 6th classes category, Mast. Abhinav Sunil Prasad and Mast. Anshmilan in the 7th and 8th classes category, in senior category Mast. Akshaiy solved the cube in 19s breaking the previous records and clinching the first place followed closely by Mast. Sanatan Shenoy who took 22s.

As a part of celebration ‘Math Quiz’ was conducted by Quiz Master Naman Verma. The quiz was presented in an interactive manner and students enthusiastically participated in it. It commenced with the declaration of rules and regulations to the participants. There were four teams in total of two participants each. The brightest and the most sagacious minds battled it out to be the ultimate winners. Themes covered in quiz were life history of mathematicians and their contributions, the origin of commonly used mathematical symbols, Mathematics for life, the fundamentals of basic axioms and postulates and application of Mathematics in Modern Day. It gave an opportunity to the young quizzers to light up their grey cells while having fun at the same time. Mast Adesh Anil Agte and Mast Mohd. Shaz were winners.

In the much awaited ‘Luck in your Hands’- Bingo Game, a tambola game but with a twist wherein mathematical calculations were to be performed speedily Miss Liyana of class 10 claimed the prize. A Presentation was given on the topic “Connection of Math and Astronomy”, it highlighted the role of Math in astronomy to calculate routes for satellites, rockets and space probes. It also focused on crucial role of Math in global positioning system, for transmitting messages, coding the images and element modeling to build spacecrafts. A thought-provoking video supported the ideas and conveyed it to audience. This was followed by demonstration on ‘Medical Application of an Ellipse’ by Mast Parth, Mast Bavish and Mast Saadallah Shaukat. They had represented Indian School Salalah in 2nd High School Science Fair Competition conducted by College of Applied Science at DhofarUniversity.

A fun filled origami session ‘Identify the Object’ was conducted where everyone present followed instructions and finally made a paper rabbit. It was a beautiful sight to see students racking their brain to finish it. AVP Mrs. Ananthalaxmi graced the occasion and encouraged the students to  take part in  such activities in future as well. This was followed by prize distribution to winners of all competitions of the day AVP Mrs. Ananthalaxmi, Head of Department Mr. Narayan Kutty, Mrs. Winnifred Lobo and Mrs Kalpana Jacob did the honors.

The activities planned for Mathematics day were informative, engaging and over all entertaining. The basic aim of celebrating such a day was to foster specific practical temperament among the students to encourage them to take baby steps in the world of Mathematics and explore its application in the spheres of economics, sciences and other discipline. 

The celebration ended with the Vote of Thanks proposed by Mast Noel P. John.
