‘Peekaboo Supermarket Activity’ by children at Indian School Salalah

Money skills are an important part of navigating through life, and as teachers, it is up to us to find fun ways to teach our students these important skills. Starting in kindergarten, a student learns the basics of money transaction with recognition and value of coins and currency. Every child knows that money is a necessary component of everyday life. However children need help in learning how to use money properly.

A great move was initiated by the EVS and Math department teachers of classes 1 and 2 in teaching the students all about shopping and handling money.  They organized a fun filled activity on 26th of November in the kindergarten block. A mock supermarket was set up in the activity room with six different stalls of fruit, vegetable, grocery, stationery, textiles and pharmacy. The objective behind this activity was to help children identify the names of coins and grasp their relative values in terms of purchasing power. It provided an understanding and awareness of the numerical value of coins and currency notes. Besides the concept of money it also helped the children understand how different people help us in various neighborhood services.

The Principal of the school Mr.T.R.Brown did the honour of cutting the ribbon to mark the inauguration of the supermarket. He accompanied by the primary incharge Mrs.Reenu Davis visited each and every stall and was indulged in some exciting shopping. He also interacted with the students while he was shopping. The children explained to him about the items displayed in their stalls. He was amused to see the little ones doing the transactions so confidently. He also advised the teachers to make it look like a real market and allow the students handle real money and let them buy things in order to develop life skills in them. He expressed his joy and happiness at the success of this activity and congratulated the teachers and the students for the initiative taken by them.

One of the hidden objectives of this activity was giving a platform to the young and over excited shoppers an opportunity to enhance their vocabulary and speaking skills in the context of buying and selling. The teachers along with a few children were the shopkeepers, while the students were the customers. The students bought items of their choice and gave the correct amount to pay for the items purchased .To make it easy for them each item had a price tag on it. The mock super market also had a cash counter with a cashier who collected money in lieu of their purchases. The room was beautifully set up with colourful stalls. Each stall had a catchy caption to draw the attention of the buyers.

The activity was carried on for the entire day, where each and every child enjoyed buying items of their choice. It was a great fun activity for the students where they not only learnt how to buy things but the value of money and how to save it. The day ended with all the classes visiting the supermarket and enjoying shopping.
