INDIAN SCHOOL SALALAH

Kindergarten Orientation Programme for the Parents

“A parent is a teacher at home and a teacher is a parent in school and the child is the centre of our universe.”

Education is a shared commitment between dedicated teachers, motivated students and enthusiastic parents. An effective partnership between parents and schools to support children’s learning leads to improved learning outcomes.

Under the able guidance of our Acting President, Dr. Syed Ahsan Jamil, Academic Chair, Mr. Jose Kaviyil Chacko and Acting Principal, Dr. S. Srinivasan, an Orientation Programme was organized for the parents of Kindergarten Section. The aim was to familiarize the parents, “as partners in progress” with the curriculum, rules and regulations of the school, teaching methodologies and the co-curricular activities.

The orientation programme was scheduled in such a way that all the parents of 14 classes will get to know their teachers and the system. It was conducted on four Saturdays (27/04/2019, 04/05/2019, 11/05/2019 & 18/09/2019) from 9.00 am to 11.00 am. There was a common session in the school auditorium and then the parents were allowed to interact with their class teacher in the class rooms.

On all the days the session started with a welcome note by the Kindergarten teachers followed by Acting Principal, Dr. Srinivasan’s address to the parents. He strongly emphasized that the parents should have healthy discussions with children and support their dreams and aspirations. He pointed out that parents should not make comparisons between siblings, use harsh or de-motivating words and have unreasonable and unrealistic expectation from their children. He also stressed on inculcating reading habits in the children and said that the parents should begin to read out stories and spend quality time with the kids. He then highlighted on the new initiatives. Spoke about the newly designed play room, digitalized classrooms which are well equipped with projectors and screen, construction work of KG shade and the new phase of Kindergarten. He also requested all the parents that they should make an attempt to meet the class teachers at least once in fifteen days. He also raised the point of competition in children and said that we should teach them to be better than what they were before rather than telling them to compete with others.

The Kindergarten Incharge – Ms. Reenu Davis in her presentation, she laid stress on effective communication between the teachers & the parents and also sought their support and suggestions so that the children could be provided the best for their overall development. She also gave guidelines about effective parenting. She also suggested different measures to nurture a child with love and care to build a strong foundation for a glorious future. The parents were briefed about the rules and regulations of the school.

After that the teachers gave an overview of the curriculum. They emphasized on the Fine motor skills, Language skills, Reading skills, Numbers, Shapes and Pattern work. They also highlighted the importance of the co-scholastic activities which provided the parents with an assurance that our curriculum involves hands-on learning activities which not only are a vent to the creative talents and energies of the children but also help in their all-round development.  The respective teachers gave detailed information about the learning parameters and stressed upon the innovative teaching and learning methodologies followed in our school.

Vice Principal (Academics), Dr. Shivaprasad Murugan shared with the parents the importance of 21st Century skills in the journey of a child’s learning and told them how they are being integrated in the curriculum. He also requested the parents to listen to their children and how they can be partners in education. He also said that teaching job is well respected post so he urged all the parents to respect and treat all the teachers with dignity and respect.

The orientation programme proved to be a sincere effort made by the school in educating the parents to look after and guide their children in a proper manner. It also helped in evolving a common teaching strategy and helped the parents in identifying suitable follow up methods to reinforce the learning process of their children. Overall it was a fruitful session.
